RdClient

RdClient is a slim remote desktop client for the protocols RDP, VNC and Hyper-V. It manages remote desktops in a tree view similar to the Windows Explorer.

Demo1

The RdClient is optimized for use with Microsoft Windows™ operating systems and is designed to meet the needs of users, which does not want to use the "Remote Desktop Connection" tool already delivered by the Windows operating system on the one hand and on the other hand to use very powerful and expensive RD-tools. The RdClient avoids high complexity and numerous configuration options in favor of a simple and clear arrangement of remote desktops.

Basically RdClient is constructed similar to Windows Explorer. In a two-stage tree view consists of folders and remote desktop several remote desktops can be structured clear and comfortable.
For each remote desktop the current status is displayed: A green icon indicates an active connection, the icon is blue so the remote computer is accessable online while a gray icon indicates that the remote computer is unavailable (offline).
Assuming the support of the remote computer, the RdClient can be used to quickly switch between the desktops to up to 3 different remote protocols and use the respective individual benefits. For example it is possible to use the clipboard in a remote desktop on a virtual machine via RDP and during a reboot temporarily switch to the Hyper-V protocol of the virtual machine.

Main features

  • Clear arrangement of Remote Desktops of the most common RD protocols similar to the Windows Explorer
  • Optimize the workspace of remote desktops selectable by different modes
  • Integrated control of the host (reboot, shutdown, etc.) of remote desktops
  • Combined use of integrated RD protocols
  • Support for remote desktops via Microsoft Remote Desktop Gateway
  • Support for VNC authentication via "MS Logon II"
  • Also suitable for use without elevated administrator privileges

Instead of a lot of remote functions, the development of RdClient was focused to the integration of useful operating system features such as the startup and shutdown of a remote computer or flushing the local DNS cache.
The use of RdClient does not require elevated administrative rights, Instead of that it can be operated with the rights of a normal Windows user. User credentials are encrypted in the configuration file via Triple DES. Passwords are stored within the configuration file and the memory encrypted a second time by AES-256.
The RdClient supports the languages German and English. A detailed user manual is part of RdClient and can also be pre-downloaded directly from the download section below.

The RdClient is optimized to provide workspace for remote desktops as much as possible, while still allowing nevertheless the navigation between remote desktops and to use the local computer. The RdClient offers several options between the representation of a Remote Desktop embedded in the workspace on the one hand and the fullscreen on the other.

For example, the tree view can be hidden by default and only is appearing to navigate between the different Remote Desktops.

The RdClient supports the languages German and English. A detailed user manual is part of RdClient and can also be pre-downloaded directly from the download section below.
The trial version allows the test of the RdClient as full version for 30 days.

September 2019 - Windows Defender Win32/Fuery.B!cl

Since the beginning of September, the Windows 10 Defender discovers a Trojan called "Win32/Fuery.B!Cl" and blocks RdClient. Therefore, as a developer, I had repeatedly contacted Microsoft support and said that RdClient in the version I signed did not contain any malware. Each time a Microsoft Analyst analyzed the incident with the following result:

We have removed the detection. Please follow the steps below to clear cached detection and obtain the latest malware definitions.

1. Open command prompt as administrator and change directory to c:\Program Files\Windows Defender
2. Run “MpCmdRun.exe -removedefinitions -dynamicsignatures”
3. Run "MpCmdRun.exe -SignatureUpdate"

Alternatively, the latest definition is available for download here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/definitions

Thank you for contacting Microsoft.

While this is nice to confirm that RdClient does not contain malware, but:

  1. Unfortunately, the Windows Defender malware detection update guide is aborted with an error message.
  2. After a normal Windows Defender upgrade, RdClient will be temporarily accepted but will be blocked again after a Windows restart.

Recently, a Microsoft analyst confirmed that RdClient does not contain any malware and Microsoft just can not explain why the Windows Defender wants to detect a Trojan in my Windows 10 system:

The file is not malware and we cannot reproduce any detection on the file. If detection is still observed, please follow the steps below to capture support log files from the system reporting detection.

On Windows 10, from elevated command prompt, change to directory "%programfiles%\windows defender" and execute mpcmdrun.exe with option GetFiles: cd "%programfiles%\windows defender" mpcmdrun.exe -GetFiles

On Windows 7, from elevated command prompt, change to directory "%programfiles%\microsoft security client" and execute mpcmdrun.exe with option GetFiles: cd "%programfiles%\microsoft security client" mpcmdrun.exe -GetFiles

All created log files will be compressed into MPSupportFiles.cab. Please send us the detected file and MPSupportFiles.cab via our web portal https://aka.ms/wdsi (select Submissions/Submit a file). We will continue the investigation once we receive the support log files.

Thank you for contacting Microsoft.

If you want to support me, please follow the instructions of Microsoft on your system and also report the result to Microsoft. I will not continue to attempt to troubleshoot Microsoft. That's why I've manually disabled the blocking of RdClient in my Windows Defender. If you also want to do that, please make sure that you use RdClient only in the version signed by me.

October 2019 - Windows Defender Win32/Unwaders.A!ml

Since the beginning of October, RdClient is now also detecting malware called "Win32/Unwaders.A!ml" by Windows Defender of Windows 10. RdClient does not contain any malware and I can not fix what is not there. Again, only the unblocking of RdClient in Windows 10 Defender remains as permissible threat.

Hi
I have a problem connecting to Windows 10 computers due to the following error; client is also Win10 and NLA works with other Windows Iterations (7,8, Server 2012, ...)

ErrorRemote Desktop was disconnected. Reason: This client OS doesn't support Network Level Authentication requested by server.Invalid Argument=Value of '2' is not valid for 'index'.

Is there a fix available?

Many thanks! :-)

All remote desktop connections are showing as offline even though they are connected and the display is showing. is there a fix for this? This means that the only way to see which connections are in use is to click on each link one at a time.

Only the status of virtual remote desktop connections were displayed offline.
Now the status is displayed again correctly.

I've only used version 2.4 and the code provided was for that version, but anytime I attempt to register I get the same error.

Which email would be best to forward my registration email to?

Hello,

I've just installed version 2.6 x64, but I'm having issues to add a remote desktop. I Fill in "Connection name", "computer name" and the credentials, but I'm unable to click on the "OK" button as it's grayed out.
I'm on a Windows 10 Home 64bits.

Thanks. Is this the updated version?

If so, the same issue is still happening.

You have to fill all red marked values. Additional to the "Connection name" and "computer name" you have to define the folder settings and the default protocol.

Since early September, the Windows Defender reports under Windows 10 that RdClient would contain a Trojan.
That's not the case!
The details are described in the section "Warnings of Anti-Virus Tools" in this article.

How do you toggle auto start on and off. I have turned the switch off from the "Startup" applet but on computer restart the switch is back on! Can you let me know how to turn auto startup off? Thanks.

The application is started using a simple shortcut in startup folder:
c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp\RdClient.lnk

If you delete the shortcut, RdClient will no longer start automatically.
